2016 S-Works Epic Early Review

I picked up a 2016 Specialized Bicycles S-Works Epic late last fall. I had a few rides on the BST and a long weekend in St George before the snow flew and the Fat Boy came out. As a result i didn't get much of a chance to 'learn' the bike. Saturday in Arizona a few of us did the inaugural Prickly Pedal endurance race. The course was unknown to all of us. We were expecting 40 miles, less than 2k of climbing, with an unknown technical nature. Well race day surprised us with almost 40 miles of single track and about 3500 feet of climbing. The course had everything, smooth windy desert singletrack, bumpy fresh cut trail, sandy and rocky washes, baby head climbs and descents. Toothpaste (nickname Boffeli gave the bike) handled it all well, the Roval Control SL carbon rims and the RS-1 up front kept the ride plush and stable. The rear suspension was just right, I it kept wide open due to the high frequency roughness of most of the trail. I use the captain control front tire and fast trak control on the rear tire. I used these in the past, for several seasons and am stoked to be on them again. I can now say that toothpaste and I are a unit, ready for many rides, races and good times with friends. Thanks to the gang at Bingham Cyclery for the service and advice, thanks to the misfits who traveled down to Phoenix with us. Looking forward to more of the same...
